Archie Gray family stance on Leeds United emerges from Elland Road

Ben Jacobs says Archie Gray’s family believe that Leeds United remains “the best place” for his development.

Leeds failed to win promotion to the Premier League and now faces the prospect of having to sell several first-team stars to balance their books.

Jacobs, however, has shared that the Gray family are unperturbed about the prospect of the midfielder spending another season in the Championship and are not agitating for a move away.

Speaking on the Just Joe Football Show (11 June), Jacobs said: “The whole Gray family are very considered in their thinking, and very content to stay, even if it’s another season in the Championship. He has come through the U21s and ultimately one breakthrough season doesn’t mean you have to jump ship.

“I’m not sure many of the clubs linked with Gray can offer him the game-time necessary for his development.

“In the Gray family’s opinion, the best place for him is Leeds United and so it is going to take something pretty special or urgent – financially speaking – from Leeds’ perspective, to change that.”

Will Leeds United be able to keep Archie Gray?

Despite the financial pressure Leeds find themselves under after failing to win promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, the Whites will be keen to keep hold of Gray.

The teenage talent is the jewel in the club’s crown and his continued development at Elland Road would not only be beneficial to the club from a sporting perspective but a financial one, too, as he could likely be sold for an even greater sum later in his career – though he would certainly fetch a hefty fee if he were sold this summer.

As well as Gray performed for Leeds in 2023/24, that was his first-ever involvement in senior football and a move to a new club so soon into his career could prove detrimental to his development.

At Leeds, he has a head coach in Daniel Farke and a fanbase who trust him – but were he to be a big-money signing at a top-six Premier League side, say, the pressure would be different.

Gray staying put at Elland Road this summer could be a decision that benefits both parties equally.
