Alexander Nubel has held a "secret meeting" with Stuttgart about a potential transfer this summer, as Leeds United plot making a bid of their own.

The Whites have been linked with the German stopper as Daniel Farke looks to find a solution between the sticks, with the position seen as a priority this summer.

But according to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Nubel and his team held a meeting with Bundesliga club Stuttgart about a loan deal from Bayern Munich next season in a blow to his chances of coming to Elland Road.

"Excl: secret meeting! Alexander Nubel was on site in Stuttgart yesterday to meet the people in charge: Werhle, Wohlgemuth, Hoeneß, Krebs," he wrote on his personal Twitter account (14 July).

"VFB pushing for a loan with an option to buy.

"He's the desired No.1 for manager Hoeneß.

"Leeds still in but there's no official offer yet.

"Bayern prefers to sell Nubel, but Stuttgart with very good chances now."

Long shot

It was always a long shot that Leeds would be able to convince a goalkeeper who was playing in Europe last season to drop down to the Championship but the club should always aim high.

Nubel is a fantastic talent and has long been tipped as the successor to Manuel Neuer's throne both at Bayern Munich and internationally for Germany.

Leeds United

But while Neuer continues to play, Nubel is looking for regular football at the highest level and it now seems that the time has come for Bayern to move him on.

For Leeds that opened up an opportunity for Farke to use the relationship he has with Thomas Tuchel, but it was always going to be a very slim chance of actually pulling it off.

The club need a goalkeeper undoubtedly, with Illan Meslier expected to leave and Joel Robles having already left at the end of his contract, but maybe they should be a little bit more realistic with so little time between now and the start of the season.
