Agent of £20,000-a-wk Leeds star hits back at contract claim made by Sky Sports pundit

Kalvin Phillips’ agent Kevin Sharp has rubbished a claim made about a release clause in the Leeds United midfielder’s contract.

When Phillips agreed to sign a new £20,000-a-week contract [Daily Mail] at Elland Road in September, Football Insider reported that a release clause worth £20million had been included in his deal.

Sky Sports pundit Michael Brown, a former player for Leeds, has since claimed that Phillips’ release clause is actually “much more” than what previous reports had suggested [Football Insider].

However after seeing what Brown claimed about Phillips’ contract on Monday, Sharp felt obliged to speak out and offer some clarity to Leeds supporters.

“Not true, and certainly no one knows any detailed clauses within any of my players’ contracts,” the agent said via his personal Twitter account.

Leeds will no doubt want a lot more than £20million for Phillips due to how well he has played for them this season and the fact that there has been talk of him getting a call up to play for England.

Phillips has recently returned from suspension and shown just how vital he is for the Whites with two tremendous displays against promotion rivals Brentford and Bristol City.

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay even suggested after the win over Bristol City that this is likely to be Phillips’ final season in the Championship, which means that if Leeds do not get promoted, there’s a good chance he’ll leave Elland Road.

How much the Whites can pocket for the 24-year-old remains to be seen now that reports of a release clause has been rubbished.

But you can bet that it will be a very big deal for whoever wants to sign the defensive midfield ace.
