20% clause written into Leeds transfer, could see club surrender millions in future – report
Leeds United confirmed the signing of Joe Gelhardt from Wigan Athletic on Monday with the young striker agreeing a four-year deal at Elland Road.
Leeds confirmed the deal on Twitter and on their website but failed to disclose any information about the agreement that was reached with cash-strapped Wigan for one of their best young players.
However, Wigan Today has now revealed that Leeds have paid an initial £1million for Gelhardt but the deal has a 20 per cent sell-on clause written into it that could see the Whites surrender millions to Wigan in the future.
It is understood that if Leeds sell Gelhardt in the next four years, they will have to pass 20 per cent of anything over £1million onto the Latics.
Wigan Today uses an example that says: “If Leeds sold him for £11m, Latics would receive £2m (a fifth of £10m) from the sale.”
It is a sad state of affairs for Wigan, who need cash as soon as possible rather than in a few years’ time due to entering administration at the back-end of last season.
Wigan were hit with a 12-point deduction that saw them relegated to League One despite being one of the Championship’s most in-form teams in 2020.
Gelhardt only scored one goal in Wigan’s 2019/20 Championship campaign but the 18-year-old is tipped to have a big future in the game and is likely to be a hit at Elland Road based on the comparisons between him and a young Wayne Rooney.
Wigan will be hoping that the Liverpool-born striker manages to be worth as much as Rooney once wast but with them trying to raise funds where they can, they would have much-preferred money straight up rather than down the line.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are keen on this Nottingham Forest star.
