£1m fee to be paid for Leeds United to sign Tottenham right-back Djed Spence – Phil Hay

Leeds United are on the verge of signing Djed Spence on loan for £1million from Tottenham, according to Phil Hay.

Writing via his personal Twitter account and on The Athletic website on Tuesday (29 August), Hay reported that Spence, 23, is set to join the Yorkshire club on a straight season-long loan without an option for the deal to be made permanent.

Hay adds that Leeds are expected to pay £1million and a medical is scheduled to take place in the next 48 hours.

Good signing

Now this is a coup.

It doesn’t matter that this is a loan deal without a permanent option because Spence is someone who should be able to come straight into Daniel Farke’s squad, push aside Luke Ayling and start every week.

He was tremendous at Nottingham Forest the season before last when he was on loan there from Middlesbrough.

The England Under-21 international was named in the Championship team of the season as Forest won promotion to the Premier League, before winning himself a £20million move to Spurs.

While things haven’t quite worked out in North London for Spence, the former Boro right-back was loaned to Rennes in France in January and he impressed there, especially in a win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Spence is a Premier League-standard signing for a club that’s struggled in the Championship so far this season so we cannot have any complaints about this deal at all.

For one season for £1million, it seems like quite a bargain.

Leeds deserve huge credit for this and it finally shows that they’re realising Ayling isn’t the answer at right-back.
