Leeds United ace Wilfried Gnonto struggles for impact again in Italy U21 showing

Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto continued a struggling run of form after making a quiet substitute appearance for Italy Under-21s on Tuesday.

The Whites’ winger hasn’t had much impact for club or country in recent weeks with his goal involvements drying up.

This has seen the 21-year-old contribute one assist across his last seven games which isn’t good enough for a player with his ability.

It doesn’t appear that an upturn in form for Gnonto is coming after another frustrating performance, this time on the international stage.

It has to be said that the pressure has been piled on the Italian somewhat this season after Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter departed in the summer.

The young forward dovetailed with the duo to great effect which ultimately helped Daniel Farke’s side go one game from promotion to the Premier League.

This season he has generally struggled which has been summed up by his latest substitute appearance for Italy Under-21s.

The Leeds man didn’t start against Ukraine but did make an appearance off the bench, replacing Fabio Miretti on 58 minutes.

Across a 34-minute showing, Gnonto registered just 20 touches but did keep up a positive success rate of 89 per cent across his nine attempted passes [SofaScore].

The ex-Zurich starlet was just unable to make anything happen going forward, putting up just one shot which was blocked while also having a zero per cent dribble success which just isn’t good enough.

With this lack of attacking prowess, the Italy attacker would have hoped to have contributed more at the back but with just two ground duels won with a 28 per cent win rate, this was far from the case.

He will now return to Elland Road ahead of a trip to face Swansea City on Sunday (24 November) where Farke will hope for a much improved showing in terms of goal output.
