Daniel Farke sack calls ridiculous as Leeds United above Real Madrid as Europe’s number one

Leeds United are now officially the most in-form team in European football after winning their first eight Championship matches of 2024.

The Whites have overcome every challenger since starting the run with a 3-0 win over Birmingham City on New Year’s Day.

They have kept a remarkable seven clean sheets across those eight matches, conceding only in the 2-1 win over Preston North End.

Leeds United aiming for instant Premier League return

Twenty-four points from a possible 24 has lifted Leeds up to second in the Championship ahead of facing leaders Leicester City later this week.

As per TEAMtalk via Twitter [21 February], no team has accrued more points in European football over that period.

Manchester City, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich are next on the list with 22 points each, followed by Liverpool and Real Madrid (20 points).

What makes this run all the more remarkable is that it was only seven weeks ago that some supporters were calling for Daniel Farke’s head.

Leeds United

As The Athletic’s Phil Hay said at the time, it was “over the top” to call for Farke to be sacked on the back of losses to Preston and West Brom – and so it has proved.

Farke did well to shut out the noise and find a winning formula, which as things stand will propel Leeds back to the Premier League.

This winning run will not last forever, of course, but these past six weeks will no doubt be defining if United do indeed manage to go back up.
