Joe Rodon will give Leeds United decision-makers transfer headache – here’s why

Leeds United will never regret bringing Joe Rodon to Elland Road.

Signed on an initial loan deal from Tottenham in the summer of 2023, Rodon instantly evolved into a starring role for Leeds during his debut 2023-24 season in West Yorkshire.

That made keeping him around Elland Road permanently was a no-brainer for the Whites come the summer of 2024, and he joined from Spurs in a deal worth a reported £10million.

Starting all 46 Championship games last season, the Welsh international was a pivotal part of Leeds’ title-winning 2024-25 campaign, helping cement himself and his teammates in club folklore forever.

Joe Rodon hasn’t been at his best for Leeds this season

However, making the step up to the Premier League from the Championship isn’t an easy one, and Leeds are still in the relegation mix with nine games to play.

Daniel Farke‘s side are nine points away from that magic 40 number that usually guarantees survival, but with the likes of Man United, Bournemouth, Brentford and Tottenham still to play, they’re going to need their best players fit and firing.

Rodon brings a host of valuable qualities to the heart of the Whites defence, with his leadership, combative approach to defending and aerial ability all helping him to become a beloved figure among the Elland Road faithful.

And at 28, he still should have a number of good years left in the tank, but if Leeds stay up this season, will those levels be good enough to warrant him continuing to hold down a starting role?

As detailed in the above graphic from Sofascore, Rodon hasn’t quite been at his best for Leeds this season, winning 52 per cent of his aerial duels and 58 per cent of his total duels respectively.

He’s also made two errors that have led to opposition shots, and one that has resulted in an opposition goal this season.

On the flip side, however, the 58-cap Wales international has averaged 5.6 clearances per game, and is recording a passing accuracy of 89 per cent, as well as scoring twice.

So, his performances have been solid, but certainly not at a level that should see him viewed as irreplaceable, but those non-technical attributes he brings like his leadership and character would make him tough to replace in that regard.

What is Rodon’s contract situation at Leeds?

Upon signing for Leeds permanently in July 2024, Rodon penned a four-year contract at Elland Road.

That means the Welshman is contracted with the Whites until the summer of 2028, meaning he’ll enter this summer with two years still to run on his deal.

This both allows Leeds chiefs to still fetch a significant transfer fee for him should they wish, but it also eases any pressure to commit to handing him a contract extension just yet.

Rodon has given enough to Leeds and played a consistently good enough level to at least warrant seeing out these final two years of his deal, before reassessing his situation in the summer of 2028.
