Dominic Calvert-Lewin has just achieved what no Leeds player has done since 1959-60 season
Dominic Calvert-Lewin found the net once more as Leeds United continued their unbeaten run at Sunderland.
Calvert-Lewin scored the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, cancelling out Simon Adingra’s opener, to earn the Whites a point against their fellow promoted side.
The ex-Everton striker has now scored seven in his past six Premier League outings, netting at least once in every game since he came off the bench at the Etihad and Leeds fell just short against Man City.
And in extending his streak he became the first Leeds player to score in six straight for 65 years.
Calvert-Lewin matches John McCole more than six decades later
Opta’s Leeds-supporting Jonny Cooper posted via X after the latest strike in the North East, indicating Calvert-Lewin is only the fourth player in club history to reach a scoring streak of six.
Tom Jennings and Charlie Keetley hold the joint record of seven, having done so in 1926 and 1930 respectively, while John McCole was the most recent in the 1959/60 season, prior to Sunday’s draw.
Calvert-Lewin will look to match the record when the Whites head to Anfield on New Year’s Day, having already netted against the reigning champions in the 3-3 draw this month.
If he is successful he can then aim to move clear with the visit of old rivals Man United to Elland Road next weekend.
Calvert-Lewin boosted his growing England credentials ahead of the World Cup as he extended his streak to the longest by an English player since Premier League record-holder (11 a decade ago) Jamie Vardy scored in eight consecutive outings in 2019.
The Leeds star will be hoping to back up Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane for Thomas Tuchel in the summer, with the former Tottenham talisman’s longest run ending at five during his time in the Premier League.
Calvert-Lewin’s stand-out Leeds hot streak
Man City 2-3 Leeds – (29 November, The Etihad)
Daniel Farke could hardly buy a point when he took Leeds to face Pep Guardiola at the end of last month, and 2-0 down at half time he no longer had anything to lose, finally switching to two up front.
Calvert-Lewin came on at the break and changed the game, and the club’s fortunes ever since, pulling a goal back quickly as City defenders failed to clear a through-ball, then winning the penalty which Lukas Nmecha would equalise from thanks to Josko Gvadiola’s lunge, but a Phil Foden winner at the death took the points.
Leeds 3-1 Chelsea – (3 December, Elland Road)
Farke was heading for the sack at Leeds after four losses on the bounce but after the fightback in Manchester stuck with his new system and was rewarded as the hosts dominated a ragged Chelsea side.
Jaka Bijol and Ao Tanaka scored early but a Pedro Neto goal after the break threatened to make things nervy, until Calvert-Lewin seized on a dreadful mix-up between Tosin Adarabioyo and Robert Sanchez under pressure from Noah Okafor, tapping into an empty net from a yard out to make the win safe.
Leeds 3-3 Liverpool – (6 December, Elland Road)
The magic appeared to have run out when Hugo Ekitike’s quick-fire double put a struggling Liverpool side two up after the interval before another fightback from Leeds.
Willy Gnonto drew a foul from Ibrahima Konate and Calvert-Lewin scored the resulting penalty, before Anton Stach quickly levelled.
Dominik Szoboszlai looked to have played the Foden role with a late third, but this time Leeds wouldn’t be denied and Tanaka slammed home a stoppage-time leveller.
Brentford 1-1 Leeds – (14 December, Gtech Community Stadium)
Calvert-Lewin’s excellent form could no longer be chalked up as a fluke when he scored his fourth in four, with Leeds’ new-found fight also undeniable.
Jordan Henderson’s shot had been diverted inside his own near post by Bijol in the 70th minute of a tight contest, only for Calvert-Lewin to rise high and nod home a trademark header from Willy Gnonto’s right-wing cross for the point.
Leeds 4-1 Crystal Palace – (20 December, Elland Road)
With Christmas rapidly approaching Leeds and Calvert-Lewin gave the fans the perfect present as they dispatched the FA Cup holders with ease.
Despite his prowess in the air the Whites used the in-form striker to great effect getting onto second balls at the back post after Ethan Ampadu long throws, as he tapped in at the second attempt to open the scoring, then nodded a Bijol flick-on home just before the break as the hosts scored from four set pieces, and conceded from the spot.
Sunderland 1-1 Leeds – (28 December, Stadium of Light)
One of his most important yet as Calvert-Lewin levelled the scores at the start of the second half, finishing off a move which saw all 11 Leeds players touch the ball as they worked it from back to front and culminated in Brenden Aaronson sliding a perfect set-up in from the right to be diverted low into the net.
