History of the stadium

Welcome to the home of Leeds United Football Club, Elland Road. This is the only ground Leeds have called their home, as they have been playing here since their inception in 1919. The stadium was previously known as the Old Peacock Ground, thus giving the Whites their nickname – the Peacocks.

Built in 1897, Elland Road hosted several rugby league games before it became a football stadium for Leeds City and later Leeds United. The West Yorkshire outfit played their first ever competitive game at the ground against Barnsley in the Midland League in November 1919, with the game ending in a 0-0 draw.

While the Leeds Rugby League Club built dressing rooms and a new stand during their lease, it was Leeds United who constructed the South Stand in 1920, while also overseeing refurbishments to the West Stand and the East Stand in 1957 and 1963, respectively.

In March 1967, an official record attendance of 57,896 was set when Leeds United hosted Sunderland in the FA Cup fifth round replay after a 1-1 draw between them at Roker Park. The crowd was too much for the stadium to handle as steel and concrete crush barriers collapsed just 10 minutes into the match, causing fans to fall onto the pitch. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, and the game restarted after a delay, only to end in another 1-1 draw, leading to another replay at Hull City’s Boothferry Park, which Leeds won 2-1.

Elland Road can currently hold just under 38,000 spectators, but plans are in place to increase that number to 53,000.
