Technical Profile
At his very best, Gnonto is a dynamic ball-carrier who excels in one-on-one situations. His low centre of gravity and explosive acceleration allows him to put opposition defenders on the back foot, making him a vital creative outlet in the final third.
Creative Threat
Beyond his dribbling, Gnonto can be a creative asset. His close ball retention and acceleration means he can get to the byline, or cut back inside from the left flank to create chances and break down low blocks.
Tactical Role
Gnonto can be a real influence in the transitions as he provides the pace required to turn defence into attack instantly. His improved defensive work rate also ensures Leeds maintain a compact shape when out of possession.
Willy Gnonto: Rollercoaster Leeds United journey
Willy Gnonto’s Leeds United career is a curious one. Signed from FC Zurich in September 2022, he was a rare bright spot in the side that ultimately suffered relegation from the Premier League. His attempt to try and force his way out of Elland Road at the end of that campaign naturally did not go down well with the Whites faithful. But, he eventually stayed and would become an influential member of the team that earned promotion from the Championship at the second time of asking under Daniel Farke last term. Since then, though, Gnonto has struggled for consistent game time, becoming a victim of Farke’s move to a more 3-5-2 system. It means that heading into the summer, Gnonto faces an uncertain future in West Yorkshire. Would now be the right time to cash in on the 22-year-old?
What is next for Willy Gnonto at Leeds United?
It is extremely difficult to predict what comes next for Gnonto at Leeds. But, he has proven in the past that there is always a way back for him at Elland Road. Right now, it simply depends on two factors: A) Will Leeds still be a Premier League team next season? B) Will Daniel Farke persist with the 3-5-2 system next term?
If the answer to both of those questions is “yes”, then Gnonto may find he is sold to fund new additions to the squad for the 2026-27 campaign. If one or the other factors changes, then it might just be that Gnonto’s importance to the starting line-up changes once again. It would be a shame to see such a mercurial talent moved on, but as things stand it might be that a sale is to the benefit of everyone.
