Scout Report

Technical Profile

At his very best, Gnonto is a dynamic ball-carrier who excels in one-on-one situations. His low centre of gravity and explosive acceleration allows him to put opposition defenders on the back foot, making him a vital creative outlet in the final third.

Creative Threat

Beyond his dribbling, Gnonto can be a creative asset. His close ball retention and acceleration means he can get to the byline, or cut back inside from the left flank to create chances and break down low blocks.

Tactical Role

Gnonto can be a real influence in the transitions as he provides the pace required to turn defence into attack instantly. His improved defensive work rate also ensures Leeds maintain a compact shape when out of possession.

Willy Gnonto: Rollercoaster Leeds United journey

Willy Gnonto’s Leeds United career is a curious one. Signed from FC Zurich in September 2022, he was a rare bright spot in the side that ultimately suffered relegation from the Premier League. His attempt to try and force his way out of Elland Road at the end of that campaign naturally did not go down well with the Whites faithful. But, he eventually stayed and would become an influential member of the team that earned promotion from the Championship at the second time of asking under Daniel Farke last term. Since then, though, Gnonto has struggled for consistent game time, becoming a victim of Farke’s move to a more 3-5-2 system. It means that heading into the summer, Gnonto faces an uncertain future in West Yorkshire. Would now be the right time to cash in on the 22-year-old?

W. Gnonto in Profile: Contract Status and Market Value

Wilfried Gnonto: What’s his market value?

Despite a frustrating 2025-26 campaign, Wilfried Gnonto remains one of Leeds United’s most valuable technical assets. According to Transfermarkt’s March 2026 update, his market value sits at approximately £15.6m, though Leeds’ actual asking price would likely be much higher. While this is a dip from his peak valuation, his age (22) and international pedigree with Italy ensure he remains a high-value commodity in the European market.

What is Wilfried Gnonto’s contract situation at Leeds United?

Gnonto’s contract at Elland Road runs until June 2028. There has been regular talk that Gnonto could be sold, and given he would be two years away from the end of his deal, those suggestions may exacerbate in the summer if he cannot force his way back into the first-team reckoning.

How has Daniel Farke’s system change impacted Gnonto?

The mid-season switch to a 3-5-2 system has been detrimental to Gnonto’s game time. With Farke opting for wing-backs like Jayden Bogle to provide width, there is no real spot for a more natural wide forward like Gnonto. Consequently, he has been relegated to the role of super-sub, something that he is unlikely to be happy with long term.

Could Gnonto be sold this summer?

Right now, it feels like a real “watch this space” scenario. First and foremost the focus has to be on Leeds ensuring they survive in the Premier League. Only when they know what league they are playing in can they make sensible decisions on player trading. If they stay up, then there is a feeling he could be on the chopping board as his progress has stalled this season. If decent bids arrive, then the 49ers Enterprises might have a call to make on Gnonto.

Should Leeds United sell Wilfried Gnonto this summer?

Yes – Reinvest the cash more wisely elsewhere
No – There is still a role for him at Elland Road

What is next for Willy Gnonto at Leeds United?

It is extremely difficult to predict what comes next for Gnonto at Leeds. But, he has proven in the past that there is always a way back for him at Elland Road. Right now, it simply depends on two factors: A) Will Leeds still be a Premier League team next season? B) Will Daniel Farke persist with the 3-5-2 system next term?

If the answer to both of those questions is “yes”, then Gnonto may find he is sold to fund new additions to the squad for the 2026-27 campaign. If one or the other factors changes, then it might just be that Gnonto’s importance to the starting line-up changes once again. It would be a shame to see such a mercurial talent moved on, but as things stand it might be that a sale is to the benefit of everyone.
