West Brom defender claims Leeds are 'Perfect example' when discussing promotion race

Everyone remembers the excitement around Leeds United at Christmas last season.

The Whites were top at that time and went on to secure dramatic 3-2 wins against Aston Villa and Blackburn, two victories that made everyone believe they were invincible.

Despite many believing promotion was guaranteed, Leeds collapsed over the Easter period and had to somehow settle for third place.

So, going into the same period this year in second might put less pressure on Marcelo Bielsa’s men – who have handed that responsibility to West Brom.

West Brom defender Darnell Furlong has claimed that the Baggies can use Leeds’ collapse last season as an example that nothing is guaranteed in the Championship.

“It’s a different season every year and a different case every year,” he told the Express and Star. “We’ll do our best to stay at the top. If that leaves us there, that’s great,” Furlong added.

“That’s the perfect example, you can say ‘look what happened last year’. We’ll do all we can to keep out in front.”

Leeds are the only club to beat West Brom this season, but the Midlands club still only hold a three-point gap to the Whites.

It will be a quite simple message being passed to the squad, just continue winning. The aim is clear, we believe if you finish above West Brom you will earn automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

Furlong is obviously trying to keep his side motivated, knowing that Leeds could have overtaken them should they have won against Fulham on Saturday.
