Athletic journalist Phil Hay has said that Leeds United winger Helder Costa is in such bad form at the moment, he’s barely good enough to sit on the bench.

Costa hasn’t started since Raphinha has established himself in the Leeds side and Hay claims that unless the Brazilian is injured or suspended, that won’t change.

He also said that it would “very hard” for Leeds to get their money back on a player who cost them £16m from Wolves last summer.

Talking on the latest episode of the Phil Hay Show podcast, the Athletic journalist said, “I don’t know what to make of him. I thought he was really disappointing at Crawley.

“The concerning thing given his cost, £15m/£16m, it’s going to be extremely hard for him to play himself into form ahead of a fit Raphinha.

“Raphinha is going to play and you cannot see any scenario other than being injured or suspended where he doesn’t play.

“That doesn’t give Costa a great opportunity to play his way back into form. But what we’re seeing from Costa is barely to my mind even justifying giving him much chance as a substitute.

“Against Leicester, he gave the ball away, made no great impact. Against Everton, it didn’t feel like Costa was out there.

“In this form, it would be very hard for Leeds to get their money back.”

Dramatic fall from grace

It’s been a dramatic slump in form for Costa, who came in for criticism from fans in the Under-23s game against Sunderland at the start of the week.

The best way to describe it is that he looks lost and we suspect that’s got as much to do with Raphinha as anything else.

Raphinha looks head and shoulders ahead of Costa and that must be very dispiriting for a player who only joined Leeds on a permanent deal this summer.

Wolves didn’t think Costa was good enough for the Premier League and it seems they might have got the best out of the deal.

He was good enough in the Championship and was a key part of Bielsa’s title-winning side.

However, he seems too weak for the Premier League and seems to get knocked off the ball at the slightest touch.

He’s got skills but it just doesn’t seem like the Premier League is the best place for him to showcase them.

We could see him moving on in the summer unless things change dramatically.
