MotD pundit urges Leeds to sign £40k/wk man over Adams & Gray
Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright has said that Leeds United should sign Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle ahead of Andre Gray, Che Adams and Billy Sharp.
The former Arsenal striker has said that Gayle would be “perfect” for Leeds as they try and secure promotion back to the Premier League.
Wright praised Leeds after watching them play at the Emirates in the FA Cup, eventually losing 1-0 to Arsenal after dominating the first half without scoring.
However, he said they needed a new goal scorer.
“The chances, the play up to the point of finishing is brilliant, but at the same time the fans have got to be more supportive, they’re feeling it from you,” Wright said on BBC Radio 5.
“Adams from Southampton, they’ve been linked with him… Billy Sharp.

“Whether it’s someone like Andre Gray… would he be the one? Sometimes I’ve seen some of his finishing. Going to a place like Leeds and needing a goal scorer to finish one chance… maybe he could be that guy. He’s not been so prolific at Watford.
“I don’t know if he’s the answer. Dwight Gayle would be perfect for Leeds.”
We’ve got the utmost respect for Wrighty. And we loved it when he came up to watch Leeds when Eddie Nketiah was playing.
However, he’s off the mark on this one.
Gayle is injured and out for at least the next 3-4 weeks with a recurrence of his hamstring issue. Even then, there’s no way of knowing how long he’d last in the Championship without breaking down again.
If he was fit would he fit the Bielsa system? There are doubts over that too.
We’d prefer to see Che Adams or Andre Gray over Gayle, and with his injury problems, we don’t think anyone will be willing to take a risk on him for £40k-a-week this January. Not without a money-back guarantee.
