'Garbage' - Many England fans tear Kalvin Phillips to shreds in in 0-0 v Denmark

England fans have blasted Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips for his performance in the 0-0 draw with Denmark in Copenhagen on Tuesday night.

Phillips, 24, was handed his international debut by Gareth Southgate at Parken, but the mercurial Leeds star failed to shine in what was yet another turgid display by the Three Lions.

Southgate opted to experiment with his team selection ahead of the Nations League showdown in Denmark’s capital.

Phillips, Leeds’ stand-out defensive midfielder of last season, featured in the same starting line-up as fellow holding midfielders Eric Dier and Declan Rice.

There was little creativity in the England side and, unfortunately for Phillips, he was unable to show how good a player he is by not being used the same way as he’s used by Marcelo Bielsa.

As such, a lot of England fans have failed to show any sympathy for the mismanaged Elland Road star, with one saying he was “garbage” against the Danes.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Phillips has substituted off in the second half to be replaced by Jack Grealish as Southgate tried to find a way for his side to break down Denmark’s defence.

But he had a way to do that from the off with Phillips – if he used him the right way.

While Phillips’ performance wasn’t the best for England, this might serve as good news for Leeds.

If people under-rate him, clubs might not want to sign him and if it becomes clear that other managers cannot get as good performances out of him as Bielsa, other managers might not want to sign him.

There’s a silver lining we can take from this but yet again, we stress that Phillips’ mediocre display was no fault of his own.

Southgate’s England are going backwards.
