Leeds United transfer news: Sam Greenwood wanted at Preston North End, Stoke, Middlesbrough and Swansea as Luke Thomas update emerges

Sam Greenwood is wanted for a Leeds United departure by four Championship rivals in the final days of the window, according to Tom Collomosse.

The Daily Mail journalist reported via Twitter Wednesday (30 August) that all of Preston North End, Stoke City, Middlesbrough and Swansea City were interested in the Whites youngster, 21, who has fallen down the pecking order at Elland Road.

Meanwhile he shared that Leicester City left-back Thomas has “options elsewhere” amid a pursuit from Leeds to bring him in at their problem full-back spot.

Greenwood has only featured for 21 minutes in total under Daniel Farke, having emerged as a surprise central midfield option under Jesse Marsch last season, but has a crowded field ahead of him in his preferred attacking positions.

Wanted

Greenwood’s versatility should work in his favour but it is probably instructive for his prospects that Farke hasn’t seen fit to use him much at all despite an injury crisis at Elland Road arriving on top of an exodus over the summer.

The German had to name two goalkeepers among the substitutes more than once while not being able to fill an entire bench, and yet one late substitute appearance in the league was the sum of the youngster’s involvement before another cameo off the bench in the Carabao Cup loss on Tuesday.

Therefore it would make sense for the club to find him some more first-team football elsewhere at the very least, and if there is reasonable money in the offing for a permanent deal they should probably consider it.

Leeds United

They may be reluctant to help out a direct rival, although that is potentially what is on the cards if they are finally able to bring in a new left-back with Thomas from the King Power.

Injuries to Junior Firpo and Sam Byram have left an already troublesome position looking even weaker, and with Leo Hjelde and Cody Drameh both potentially leaving before the deadline Farke needs a specialist to come in.

Interest from rivals in Greenwood may be a positive development at this stage but it is very much not good news when it comes to Thomas.

In other Leeds United news, the club have “money to burn” as another bid is tabled in the race to clinch late deals before the window shuts.
