Leeds United transfer news: Burnley now eye Willy Gnonto move amid Everton interest

Burnley has emerged as the latest Premier League threat to Leeds United keeping hold of Willy Gnonto, according to The Telegraph.

Mike Keegan reported on the newspaper’s website on Monday (7 August) that Vincent Kompany is looking for forwards before the close of the window and has “eyed” the Whites’ teenage attacker, although “nothing is close” yet on a deal.

Everton are also still credited with an interest in the Italy international who started as a makeshift striker in Daniel Farke’s first game in charge against Cardiff City on Sunday.

Gnonto, 19, has been linked extensively with a move away from Elland Road this summer, with wide interest from England, Italy and Germany reported from various sources.

With the push from Everton seemingly falling short in recent weeks Farke has at least managed to start the season with the former FC Zurich man in the squad.

But as the current developments with Tyler Adams show that will mean little if more interest explodes from the Premier League before deadline day.

The Clarets may not be the big six giants that would represent an obvious step up but are an upwardly mobile side under Kompany who might attract Gnonto more than a switch to Goodison Park where they have endured back to back relegation battles just like the Whites.

Leeds United are currently well stocked with wide attackers, with Gnonto, Crysencio Summerville, Luis Sinisterra, Dan James and Ian Poveda all featuring in the 2-2 Cardiff draw, and both Jack Harrison and Georginio Rutter out injured.

Farke could feasibly lose a couple and still have enough options going forward, but most supporters wouldn’t like to see it be Gnonto who goes unless an offer the club can’t refuse comes in.

He doesn’t have a release clause in his deal as the likes of Adams do, so the Whites can play hardball if they want, but the manager looks like he needs at least four signings whatever happens during the rest of the window, and said himself he wants more depth at 10 positions.

So whether it is Burnley or a bigger club before the deadline money could still talk and see Gnonto move on.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites want to sign a bargain Premier League striker who is trying to force his way out.
