Leeds United left with a clear run at £12million Joel Piroe following Southampton decision
Leeds United had a free run to strike a deal for Swansea City striker Joel Piroe after Southampton opted not to launch a bid, according to talkSPORT
The radio station provided an update via Twitter (24 August), confirming the Whites are set to complete the signing of the 24-year-old striker in a deal worth £12million.
And Daniel Farke’s side were dealt a helping hand in their pursuit, as Southampton chose not to make an offer for the Dutchman.
Southampton were relegated alongside Leeds from the Premier League last season, and both clubs will be keen to make an instant return, although it seems as if it will be Leeds who have Piroe’s help in doing so.
Stress-free
Plenty of board members would have breathed a sigh of relief at Elland Road when they discovered that the Saints weren’t preparing to make an offer for Piroe. Had Russel Martin’s men made an approach of their own, it could have resulted in a bidding war, which wouldn’t have been enjoyable for any club involved, except Swansea of course.
Instead, Leeds had a free shot at a player who has been so devastating in the Championship since his arrival, which seems like a rather brilliant stroke of fortune. It is quite surprising that no other club rivalled the West Yorkshire side or looked to at least make it difficult for them.

Piroe has scored 41 goals in 91 Championship appearances and will be an incredibly useful asset in the Whites’ fight for promotion this season. Southampton could live to regret their decision when it comes to the business end of the campaign.
In other Leeds United news, the timeline of Piroe’s transfer has been revealed by Fabrizio Romano.
