David Norris: Leeds United took a chance on signing Raphinha
Ex-Leeds United midfielder David Norris is surprised by how well Raphinha has done at Elland Road this season since joining from Rennes in September.
Raphinha, 24, came off the bench to assist Rodrigo’s goal in the 3-1 win against Tottenham on Saturday as the Brazilian winger made his 13th goal contribution of the campaign.
Since joining the Whites, Raphinha has scored six goals and supplied seven assists in 27 league appearances, which has attracted attention from elsewhere.
According to SportItalia journalist Gianluigi Longari, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United are all interested in Raphinha.
However, there’s not a Leeds fan in the world who’d want to see the ex-Rennes attacker move on this summer and based on what Norris has heard from inside the club, the players wouldn’t want that either.
Speaking to FootballFanCast, Norris said: “He’s really skilful and a joy to watch but Leeds took a chance on him and he’s produced. From the players I’ve spoken to, he’s supposed to be a really good lad in the changing room which would’ve helped him settle.
“I am a little bit surprised at just how well he has done, but with the way Leeds are and from what the lads say about him it makes sense that he’s done really well.”
We’ve ran out of superlatives to describe Raphinha over the course of the season.
He’s burst onto the scene in English football since his arrival from Rennes in September and that £17million looks more of a bargain each time he takes to the field.
We definitely missed Raphinha during his recent spell with injury but it didn’t take him long to show his magic when he returned as a substitute against Spurs on Saturday.
Raphinha found Rodrigo with a great pass after a superb run on the ball. It was as though he’d been playing all match with the way he simply flicked a switch on turned it on as he arrived on the pitch.
We’ve already seen speculation linking the Brazilian with a move away from Elland Road this summer but that simply cannot be allowed to happen.
We doubt that Victor Orta and Marcelo Bielsa will stand for it unless a ridiculously big bid comes in from one of the Premier League’s top clubs.
It’s understandable that clubs would want Raphinha – why wouldn’t they?
Leeds just need to do their best to keep him happy and stop the attraction of playing in Europe from turning his head in the summer.
In other Leeds United news, Darren Fletcher was blown away by this “outstanding” Leeds player who’s surprised him this season.
