Cooper opens up on 'Emotional' wait over the future of Bielsa at Leeds in summer

Once Leeds United fell at one of the last hurdles last season in the quest for promotion to the Premier League, there was a nervous wait to see whether or not Marcelo Bielsa would remain at the club.

Liam Cooper has revealed in an interview with Phil Hay, that the players reported to Thorp Arch the day after the defeat to Derby County at Elland Road.

It was revealed that it felt like a goodbye to the South American, as he or any of the squad didn’t get the chance to tell him how much they wanted him to stay.

Liam Cooper has recently opened up on that day to the Athletic, claiming that it was unclear whether or not Bielsa was going to remain at Elland Road.

“It was an emotional day,” Cooper said.

“We didn’t know if Marcelo was going to be here this season and it all felt a bit like ‘goodbye’. I didn’t get to speak to him myself but I think he could tell from the way we were that the lads were desperate for him to stay.

“We felt like we owed it to ourselves to do it second time around and I think he felt like he owed it to us. Have one more go and get out of this league. That’s what was in my head.”

It is no surprise that the Leeds squad were nervous over the future of Bielsa. The Argentine hasn’t exactly got the best record for sticking around at clubs for a prolonged time.

After such a crushing defeat and a number of problems in that Championship season, no one could have held it against him should he have made the decision to leave.

That didn’t happen, and Bielsa is midway through his second attempt at promotion with Leeds, something which is looking likely at the halfway point.
