Wayne Rooney sack: Announcement made as Leeds miss out on dream scenario

Leeds United fans will fondly remember the guard of honour at Derby County back in July 2020, led by Wayne Rooney after promotion to the Premier League.

Fast forward nearly five years and the Whites are pushing for promotion from the Championship again, although Rooney is now in management.

Struggling with Plymouth Argyle, who are rock bottom of the table, Leeds fans are loving every minute.

Wayne Rooney sacked today

It’s now even better for Leeds fans though, who will surely love the news that the former Manchester United man has just been sacked at Home Park.

The Greens confirmed on 31 December with an announcement that Rooney has parted ways with Argyle, dressed up as a mutual decision, which is really the sack [Alex Crook].

There is one negative to this news though.

Leeds absolutely dominated Rooney and Plymouth earlier in the season at Elland Road, winning 3-0 without conceding a single shot.

The return fixture at Home Park is set for the final day of the season, and if Daniel Farke remains in top spot and brings home the Championship title, it won’t be in front of Rooney.

Watching the former England international head a guard of honour at Derby last time the club was promoted was fantastic, but this dream second scenario is now impossible.

Leeds end 2024 on top of the pile after big away wins against Stoke and Derby, and all focus is on making sure they don’t miss out on promotion at the final hurdle yet again.

For now, it’s likely time to wave goodbye to Rooney – he’s not cut out for this.
