Wayne Rooney embarrasses himself with laughable Leeds United claim v Plymouth Argyle
Leeds United were easy winners during their 3-0 romping of Plymouth Argyle at Elland Road on Saturday.
Three first-half goals from Dan James, Joel Piroe and Brenden Aaronson gave Daniel Farke’s side a comfortable lead, allowing them to take their foot off the gas in the second half.
The Whites have now climbed the Championship table up into second, just three points behind league leaders Sunderland, extending their unbeaten run to eight matches.
Plymouth, meanwhile, are in the relegation zone, three points above the foot of the table, claiming just 12 points from their first 13 matches of the campaign, yet Wayne Rooney wanted to blame “luck” for the result.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post [2 November], he said: “Leeds are a fantastic team, difficult team to play against. From our point of view, we’re trying to improve.
“I think there are elements of luck, certainly on two of the goals. We had to defend the box better than we did for the goals.”
Leeds United completely dominate in Plymouth Argyle win
Leeds’ victory has absolutely nothing to do with luck. Even with the goals, players were in the right place at the right time to steer home rebounds, something footballers are taught from a very young age.
To demonstrate the Whites’ dominance in the first half compared to the second half, their number of shots reduced from 15 to eight, with the number of big chances also reducing from two to zero [FotMob].
Farke’s side had plenty of opportunities to bulge the back of the net, but with players clearly saving their legs after the half-time break, the only “luck” was that Rooney’s side only conceded three.
The Pilgrims are now in a torrid position, with just one win in their last six matches, three points above last-place Portsmouth, and Rooney looks to be finding excuses for it all.
