Viktor Johansson medical scheduled as £1m winner named in Leeds United and Stoke City transfer race

Leeds United look set to miss out on Viktor Johansson as he has a medical booked with Stoke City ahead of a £1 million move.

A report from Sportbladet (2 May) suggested that Leeds were amongst the teams interested in the Swedish shot-stopper.

Now it appears that their pursuit hasn’t been fruitful as John Percy has reported (17 May) that he is set to sign for Stoke.

His medical is said to be booked for Friday after the Potters activated the release clause in his contract after Rotherham were relegated.

This could have proved to be a shrewd piece of business by Leeds regardless of their division ahead of next season.

Leeds United to miss out on Viktor Johansson

Given that he was said to be available for just £1m, Johansson could have been a superb signing by the Whites this summer.

With the financial issues that may lie ahead for Daniel Farke’s side, a top player for a cheap fee may have been clever.

Considering how bad Rotherham were this season, the Swede was up there with the best goalkeepers in the league and shone in a struggling side.

He made an average of 4.09 saves per 90 this campaign, a number juiced by the number of shots he faced but kept a save percentage of 67.9 [FotMob].

Across the course of the season, he prevented 3.19 which is up there with the best in the division despite keeping just five clean sheets.

He is a keeper for the modern age given his 38 times acted as a sweeper and 60 high claims across the season.

Although Ilian Meslier has had a superb season there is no harm in some useful competition for the Frenchman.

Given that Karl Darlow has made just two appearances this season [FotMob], he may be looking for a move away from Elland Road.

Johansson would have been a great option and someone to push Meslier throughout the season, in the Championship or Premier League.
