Simon Wood must take advantage of Leeds United Women situation in ‘last chance’

Simon Wood has had an excellent season with Leeds United Women, but their form has unfortunately started to dip at the wrong time.

Although things looked positive going into the Christmas break, since returning to action, the Whites have lost three of the six games they have played.

Leeds now sit 10 points away from the top of the table, although winning the league is still mathematically possible and Wood will be eager to go for it.

Leeds United have to take advantage

Leeds did not play this weekend, while top-placed Cheadle Town were knocked out of the County Cup semi-final after losing in a penalty shootout, which could knock their momentum in the league.

Chorley sit four points above Leeds in the table and don’t play at the weekend due to cup action, which gives Leeds an excellent opportunity to gain some ground in the table.

Wood’s side make the trip to eighth-placed Barnsley on Sunday (23 March), and although they beat Doncaster Rovers in the County Cup, Leeds will have the opportunity to be the more intense side.

Leeds have a narrow chance at promotion.

Although the game taking place at Oakwell could be intimidating for some, Leeds have experience in big games, having taken the stage at Elland Road before, and the boss will be confident his side has what it takes to handle it.

The Whites do rely on other results going their way, but the league always proves to be unpredictable at this stage and with Leeds one of the only sides who will be feeling refreshed, this is a perfect opportunity to take full advantage.

Wood building strong foundations at Leeds

Wood and his Leeds team have shown they won’t give up until the end, epitomised by their game against Durham in February.

However, if the West Yorkshire outfit do miss out on promotion this term, it looks highly likely that they will be competing at the top end of the table again next season.

The addition of Ria Montgomery from Huddersfield Town shows that the project is underway in West Yorkshire, and Leeds should be able to retain a core of their squad.

The likes of Kath Smith have shown their value and will no doubt have big parts to play next term for Wood.

Regardless of what happens this season, the future looks very bright for Leeds.
