Signing Lewis O’Brien for meagre transfer fee will be perfect business for Leeds United

Leeds United received a major boost in the pursuit of Huddersfield Town’s midfielder Lewis O’Brien.

According to a report published by the Sun on Friday (May 28), the Terriers were willing to offer the central midfielder a new contract if the Terriers earned promotion back to the Premier League.

However, Huddersfield suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Nottingham Forest on Sunday in the Championship playoffs.

It is believed that the 23-year-old has a release clause of £10million which can be activated in the summer.

The Huddersfield academy product has been on Leeds’ radar for a while now as he was also closely monitored by Marcelo Bielsa last season.

O’Brien has been one of the standout players in the Championship during the recently concluded season.

The central midfielder made 43 appearances across all competitions — the highest he has ever made in a domestic season.

Even though he contributed in just six goals in the entire season, he was very important to Huddersfield’s counter-attacking setup because of his ability to find the right pass when it mattered the most.

At Leeds, the 23-year-old might prove to be an excellent acquisition as he can be that guy who can help in breaking the opposition’s defensive units from the centre of the park.

Not only O’Brien is young and has many aspects of the game to be developed further, but he can also add to the Leeds overall squad depth which looked thin during the last campaign where the side suffered from so many players getting injuries.

In total, O’Brien has played 123 matches for Huddersfield in all competitions, scoring eight times and providing 10 assists in the process.

In other Leeds United news, a first-team star wants to stay but the club might struggle to pay him without the 49ers investment.
