Oxford United development could provide huge boost for Leeds United

Oxford United announced the sacking of manager Des Buckingham and it could provide a huge boost for Leeds United.

Leeds will be looking to bounce back from Saturday’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Preston with a win against Oxford and they may have just been provided a huge boost in achieving that.

The news of Buckingham’s sacking is not only surprising but it could severely affect the Championship strugglers when the promotion-chasing Whites welcome Oxford to Elland Road on 21 December.

The decision seems a very knee-jerk reaction to what was a poor defeat at home to Sheffield Wednesday after the club released a statement on 15 December.

Leeds United must take advantage of potentially managerless Oxford

The Whites’ draw against Preston on 14 December was certainly another case of two points dropped and they can’t afford to do the same against Oxford.

With promotion rivals Sunderland and Sheffield United both winning, Leeds lost some ground in the chase for a top-two finish and games against teams at the bottom of the table are ones that they simply have to be winning.

In order to do so, Daniel Farke may have to make the decision to drop Illan Meslier with the club potentially losing confidence in the Frenchman after another howler at the weekend.

Buckingham was seemingly a popular figure at Oxford and his sacking is likely to have unsettled those involved with the club and Leeds must take advantage.

Failure to do so could see them drift further away from Sheffield Utd with a three-point gap currently separating the two sides.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have been mooted to sign one Premier League star in January.
