Niall Huggins earns call up to Wales Under 21s squad
Leeds United youngster Niall Huggins has been called up to the Wales Under-21s squad for the upcoming match against the Republic of Ireland.
The left-back has been in fine form for Leeds Under-23s this season and made his debut for the first-team at Arsenal last month.
Marcelo Bielsa is clearly a fan, and it seems Wales Under-21s boss Paul Bodin is also impressed with Huggins’ performances this year.
Ben Parker praised the 20-year-old after his debut display, suggesting on the LS11 podcast that he is a “typical Bielsa player” who has been the “standout” performer for the Under-23s.
International recognition
Things are getting better and better for Huggins and he should be brimming with confidence following today’s news.
It is a real encouraging sign for his development that he is highly thought of outside of Leeds.
Bielsa clearly believes he has the maturity to perform for the senior team and now Huggins can display his talent in a different capacity.
The call-up is also recognition of the good work being done by the academy.
The under 23s side is bossing Premier League Two Division Two this year with 15 wins in 20 games, and Huggins has been a key part of that.
Our youngsters play football in the right way but also show superb composure when they step-up to the first-team.
The likes of Joe Gelhardt, Crysencio Summerville and Sam Greenwood often grab the headlines so it is telling that Huggins is the player who has received international recognition.
At The Emirates Huggins achieved 88% pass accuracy and completed one dribble [WhoScored] despite the difficult circumstances of the match.
Hopefully the international call-up makes him more determined to impress and hungry for more recognition.
That could lead to a bright future at Elland Road and we are excited to see how he develops.
