New Willy Gnonto contract on cards very soon at Leeds United

After seemingly being hung out to dry by Javi Gracia in recent weeks, Willy Gnonto’s future at Leeds United has emerged as a major talking point amid the ongoing relegation battle.

The Italian forward has been a standout player for the Whites since sealing his switch from FC Zurich to Elland Road last summer for a meagre £3.8million fee.

And despite recent reports linking the 19-year-old with a move away from Leeds United this summer, Gnonto’s agent, Claudio Vigorelli, has admitted that a new contract could be on the cards very soon.

As reported via Calciomercato (30 April), Vigorelli said: “The club is delighted with his performances.

“After survival, we will probably meet with the club to talk about a possible extension, but there will be no problems.

“He is very happy there and I think he will stay there. His path is there.”

Evidently, Leeds must first stave off the impending threat of Premier League relegation under new boss Sam Allardyce, but if this part of the equation is successful, the attacking livewire could well sit down in a meeting and start to negotiate terms soon after the season’s close.

Although the Premier League can often be a baptism of fire for young players, Gnonto has taken the pressure in his stride this term.

The Italian international has netted four goals and provided four assists from 25 games this season, including a goal at Old Trafford and a quite superb scissor kick in the FA Cup.

Gnonto is likely to play a crucial role in the club’s chances of beating the drop this season, which includes a daunting trip to Manchester City this weekend, followed by matches against Newcastle, West Ham and Spurs.

Hopefully, the former FC Zurich gem can continue to send chins wagging in the Leeds fanbase, fire the club away from what looks like imminent relegation and subsequently start to negotiate a new contract at Elland Road.
