MOT View: Victor Orta interview suggests when Leeds may be able to continue PL promotion bid
Victor Orta has suggested that Leeds United might be able to continue their bid to win promotion to the Premier League in the next couple of months.
Leeds’ promotion charge was brought to a halt last month when the EFL opted to suspend the 2019/20 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Since then, group training sessions have been disbanded and the government has enforced a lockdown on the majority of the nation.
There are still two more weeks left of the current lockdown period but there are still hundreds upon hundreds of people dying each day from this awful illness.
Football fans have remained optimistic that the season will be able to reconvene at some point in the near future and the best glimmer of hope is coming from Germany.
Chief executive of the Deutsche Fussball Liga Christian Seifert has recently told the Financial Times that the plan is for the Bundesliga to resume in May with the season being completed by the end of June due to contracts expiring at the end of the month.
“In Germany, our plan has always been to finish by June 30 and not to have these complex legal decisions,” Seifert said.
Leeds’ director of football Orta has now revealed that all eyes are on Germany with regards to football resuming in the United Kingdom.
“Germany will be key for the restart, which is what they ask me the most,” said Orta, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
“Germany will mark the rest of us. If they start and nothing happens, the rest of us will have the courage to return.”
Germany will be able to resume their football season because there have been far fewer deaths in that country than there has in the United Kingdom.
Clubs in Germany have also been back in training for some time now so while the Bundesliga might restart next month, it could be a while before the Championship follows suit.
However Orta’s optimism suggests what the club is hoping will happen and, no doubt, what the EFL are also planning to do.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites’ worst display of the season could be the best thing that happened to them.
