MOT View: Under-23s star ready to step up as journo claims 18y/o on ‘Periphery’ of Leeds squad

Robbie Gotts became the latest in a long production line of youngsters to make their Leeds United debut on Monday against Arsenal.

His path was probably one of the toughest, being named as an unused substitution 35 times before finally getting the nod from Marcelo Bielsa.

Gotts will now look to make his Championship debut after the likes of Pascal Struijk and Oliver Casey also made the jump up this season.

Another excelling in the under-23s is Mateusz Bogusz, and although he made his senior debut in the EFL Cup against Stoke earlier in the season, he has yet to break through into the Championship side.

Reliable journalist Beren Cross recently commented on Bogusz, claiming that the young Polish midfielder is on the verge of breaking through after travelling with the squad to the Arsenal game.

Asked ‘What’s happened to Bogusz?’ in a Q&A for Leeds Live [8/01, 15:04 pm], he said: “With the under-23s. Played at the weekend. Travelled with the squad to Arsenal and watched from behind the dugout. Just on the periphery of the matchday 18.”

Bogusz was out on the pitch applauding the fans, as he once again got to experience the senior matchday squad without being named in the 18.

We have watched Carlos Corberan’s side frequently this season, and Bogusz has been one of the standout performers for the Whites.

His ability on dead balls is second-to-none, and although he might go about his business quietly in midfield, he is certainly one to watch in the next couple of months.

In his first senior start in the cup against Stoke, the 18-year-old had four shots on goal [ESPN] – something that is helped by his ability to find pockets of space around the edge of the area, highlighting his confidence in front of goal.

There is a space in that attacking midfield role. Pablo Hernandez and Tyler Roberts are still both injured, and although Gotts did get the nod against Arsenal, he is much more suited to a deeper spot in the side.
