MOT View: Twist in key PL meeting means Leeds promotion still on course

The results of the key meeting between all Premier League clubs on Friday are in and it’s still good news for Leeds and promotion.

It had been reported by the Times that over half of the 20 clubs were going to push for the Premier League to be declared over by July 1 whether the games were completed or not.

However, according to the Sun, that “rebellion” was crushed and the idea wasn’t pushed forward.

In a significant twist in the meeting, an executive from one of the Premier League’s big six clubs decided to “call out” the rebels.

The upshot was that the view of the top six –  Manchester United, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham – that the season should be finished, was upheld and the rebel view not even discussed.

The executive was quoted as saying, “Our aim is to finish this season and protect the start of next season.

“Everybody should get on board and those who don’t, or who are suggesting other things, are being totally disingenuous and unbelievable.”

The result of the key meeting was that games could resume on June 8, with training starting in mid-May.

However, those dates are still conditional on the state of the Coronavirus outbreak.

The good news for Leeds is that the Premier League is still committed to playing out the remaining 92 fixtures.

That represents the clearest path for Leeds to win promotion as normal, with the EFL also looking to follow a similar timeline.

If the Premier League doesn’t finish there could be all sorts of legal issues if the relegation spots aren’t mathematically set – and even then there could be calls for the season to be voided if it’s not completed.

That’s why the Big Six in the Premier League and Leeds’ interests are closely aligned at the moment and, so far, it’s still good news for promotion.
