MOT View: Sunday display shows Leeds exactly how it’s done as West Brom stroll to victory
It was nothing short of a disastrous weekend for Leeds United in the Championship promotion race.
Fulham and Brentford kicked it off by both picking up narrow wins against Blackburn and Middlesbrough. Then it was the Whites themselves who got it all wrong by losing 2-0 against rivals Nottingham Forest.
If you thought it couldn’t get any worst, it definitely did on Sunday. West Brom travelled to Millwall and won 2-0. Putting themselves four points adrift at the top with breathing space.
But, it was the manner of the Baggies performance that will have sent a warning out to the rest of the division. Millwall is notoriously known for being one of the most difficult grounds to visit in the country, and Slaven Bilic’s men made it look like a stroll in the park.
West Brom had 29 shots, which was an incredible 22 shots more than the home side according to WhoScored. The Midlands club found the attacking formula that Leeds have been missing in the past couple of months.
Compare that to the Whites, who only managed one shot on target at the City Ground, the Liam Cooper header which should have been the chance that sent his side on their way – in typical Leeds fashion, he missed.
With West Brom’s new signings Callum Robinson and Kamil Grosicki hitting the ground running, they could get much better as well. Compare that to Ian Poveda and Jean-Kevin Augustin, who look way off the pace and nowhere near being good enough.
If the Baggies can continue that run of form in the Championship, it could be bad news for Leeds. The Whites are definitely the worst-looking side in the top five right now, and the only way to turn this around would be to put together a run themselves – starting with Brentford on Tuesday.
West Brom showed Leeds how it was done this weekend, and that certainly has to change and sooner rather than later.
