MOT View: Perfect time for player to return as Leeds mainstay form reaches new low v Preston

Mateusz Klich’s form has been a worry for Leeds United fans in recent weeks.

The 29-year-old has been ever-present for the Yorkshire giants this season and has started every Championship fixture.

However there have been signs that the Poland international has started to look jaded in recent fixtures as his performance in the 1-1 draw against Preston on Boxing Day was that of someone who appeared as though he needed a rest.

Klich was perhaps the most responsible Leeds player when Preston scored through Alan Browne in the first half as he was dispossessed for dallying on the ball for too long.

Alex Neil’s side then quickly countered and before Klich could even get back on his feet the ball was in the back of the net.

Klich had to play in a more attacking role in the midfield due to Pablo Hernandez’s absence but it is clear that he is not best suited for that.

Luckily, Tyler Roberts is on the verge of a return to the side after a spell on the sidelines with an injury and the Wales international’s recovery comes at a perfect time for Leeds.

Roberts, 20, has only started four games for the Whites this season but in those four starts, he played as an attacking midfielder, scored one goal and helped the Yorkshire club win four games.

The former West Brom player has had his injury issues at Elland Road but you would have to see his return as a major boost with the way that Leeds’ midfield is looking at the moment.

Hernandez is out for a month, Adam Forshaw has been out since September while Jamie Shackleton – like Roberts – is close to a return.

Leeds’ midfield is down to the bare bones and Roberts’ return will at least hand Bielsa the chance to rest and rotate Klich for a game or two so that the Polish ace can rediscover some form.

In other Leeds United news, Bielsa has reacted to Jack Clarke’s exit.
