MOT View: Orta cementing Leeds legacy after Ornstein comments on Jan transfer

Athletic journalist David Ornstein is a very well respected journalist who ended up at the new media outlet after working for the BBC.

He broke the brilliant news on Tuesday that Man United had failed in a late bid to hijack the Leeds move for Jean-Kevin Augustin.

And while he credited Marcelo Bielsa as being key to the deal, director of football Victor Orta came in for some very high praise too.

When things go wrong with the Leeds recruitment, it’s Orta that gets it in the neck.

And it’s fair to say that he made some very dodgy transfers when he first arrived at Leeds, with players like Jay-Roy Grot, Pawel Cibicki and Felix Weidwald all coming in and failing. And there were plenty more where they came from.

However, since Bielsa has arrived at Elland Road, the recruitment has been fantastic.

Leeds might have missed out on Daniel James last January but there’s no doubting that Orta and Bielsa had recognised a real talent before most Leeds fans even knew who he was.

Signing Ian Poveda and Jean-Kevin Augustin has made for a very good January window for Leeds, and if any fans doubted how much Orta had to do with it, the comments from Ornstein will put them straight.

Talking on the Ornstein & Chapman podcast, Ornstein said, “From people who I speak to the credit goes to Bielsa of course but also heavily to Victor Orta, the director of football there.

“The process is key, in terms of their presentations, their scouting, their work on the players and the families.

“Eddie Nketiah was said to be very happy. He met a girl up there who he’s with now. The work Leeds put in to bring these players in is second to none from what I’m being told.”

He said that United put in a “disorganised” late bid that left Augustin very unimpressed.

Orta has taken a lot of stick this window after Leeds fans were left concerned after a protracted chase for Che Adams went nowhere.

Credit where credit’s due – after what Ornstein said he should start getting the credit that he deserves and we believe he’s cementing a legacy that will end with Leeds in the Premier League.
