MOT View: On-fire Leeds U23s duo could force long-serving player to exit next season
Leeds United under-23s have finally found their feet in the Premier League 2 after a slow start to the season.
The young Whites started their campaign with an undeserved 4-0 defeat at Stoke, and a 2-2 draw against Wolves at Thorp Arch.
After the sloppy start, Mark Jackson’s side have sealed back-to-back wins against North East duo Middlesbrough and Sunderland to catapult themselves up the table.
They mainly have two players to thank for that: Sam Greenwood and Joe Gelhardt.
That could spell bad news for Ryan Edmondson, who has finally sealed a loan switch this season after failing to break into the first-team at Elland Road.
Greenwood got the winner on Friday, and has now scored five goals in three games for the under-23s, and is looking better with each match behind him.
His partner, Gelhardt, suffered a knock against Boro but has arguably been the best player at the heart of everything in the final third.
The two summer signings have brought a new dynamic to Thorp Arch, and Edmondson will be nervous over his future in West Yorkshire.
If Edmondson was going to make it at Elland Road under Marcelo Bielsa, he would have by now, but after two poor years, he was sent out on loan.
Gelhardt and Greenwood offer everything the long-serving Leeds youngster doesn’t – not only goals but that determination and work rate on and off the ball that was desperately missing last year.
Edmondson has only featured for 71 minutes at Aberdeen and is way down the pecking order after his recent injury problems.
It is hard to see him catching the eye at Pittodrie at all this season, and if Gelhardt and Greenwood continue at this rate, it would be no surprise to see Edmondson sold next summer.
