MOT View: NY Times claim on potential restart date may be when Leeds can continue promotion bid

Even though some clubs have started to resume training in Germany ahead of possible restarting their season in May, Leeds United may have to wait until July.

That is according to the New York Times, which has today claimed that the Premier League is likely to return in July. You would imagine that once the Premier League is able to reconvene, then the Championship and the rest of the EFL will follow suit and that could be when Leeds can push on with their bid for promotion.

Before football ground to a halt last month due to the coronavirus outbreak, Leeds were on a five-match winning streak that saw them move top of the Championship table and seven points clear of third-placed Fulham.

If the Whites were relying on momentum in the latter stages of the season to win promotion then that is likely to have gone now with players not training together since March 17 when the government’s guidelines about congregating in groups changed.

But that is the case for every team who will have seen their form completely reset by the time July comes around.

Another thing that needs to be taken into account if the football is to return in July is what happens to contracts, both ones that expire on June 30 and loan deals that also end then.

Gaetano Berardi is the only Leeds player whose contract ends in June but there are a number of loanees who the club will have to sort out extended terms for.

Either way, the fact that football could return in July is a boost. It seems a long way away as we’re yet to even celebrate Easter this year but it’s better than the season being declared null and void.

In other Leeds United news, this 20-year-old has a lot to prove if he wants to have a future at the club.
