MOT View: Newcastle reported interest in £12m ace could see Leeds take advantage
Leeds United are looking to strengthen a number of different positions ahead of their return to the Premier League.
One of those could be in midfield. Kalvin Phillips, Mateusz Klich and Pablo Hernandez were utilised by Marcelo Bielsa in the Championship, with Adam Forshaw struggling with injuries.
Tyler Roberts was also used in the playmaker role, as Bielsa looked to plug gaps due to a lack of options at Elland Road.
According to the Chronicle, Leeds have held fresh talks with ex-Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff, who has become a free agent this summer.
The 20-year-old has yet to sign a new deal at St James’ Park, and the Yorkshire-born talent could move to Elland Road instead.
Steve Bruce is keen to re-sign Longstaff, but he has also set his sights on other midfielders to bring into the club.
The Daily Mail has reported that the Magpies are preparing a £12million bid for Everton midfielder Tom Davies, as well as bringing in Jeff Hendricks.
It appears as if Bruce is preparing for the possibility that Longstaff isn’t sticking around at Newcastle, and Leeds could definitely take advantage of that.
With Newcastle potentially bringing in two new midfielders, it would be much-harder for Longstaff to get back into that side, and newly-promoted Leeds could be the perfect destination.
Bielsa is a coach that every-young player wants to play for, with Cody Drameh admitting that was why he left Fulham recently to move to Elland Road.
The 20-year-old would also offer Leeds good Premier League experience, and he even scored twice against Manchester United last season – something which will make him an immediate favourite in West Yorkshire.
Leeds could take advantage of Newcastle’s transfer activity, and we would expect the Whites to push forward with their talks if Hendricks and Davies complete a switch to St James’ Park.
