MOT View: Key Premier League update is very good news for Leeds promotion bid

Goodison has been given the green light to host the Merseyside derby after a meeting including the Liverpool city council.

Liverpool can also play their remaining games at Anfield, behind closed doors and that’s undoubtedly a big boost for Leeds United’s promotion bid.

Telegraph journalist Dan Roan delivered the news on Wednesday morning and it’s a major development that could see Liverpool clinch the title at Anfield.

Liverpool and Leeds had been lumped together as high risk and it was reported that they could be forced to play at neutral venues.

However, this sets a major precedent that should be very good news for Leeds – games don’t get much bigger and more combustible than Everton v Liverpool in this country.

It’s bad enough that fans can’t get into stadiums to watch Leeds secure promotion.

However, the thought of them doing it at a neutral venue would be heartbreaking.

It’s more than that, though. Sporting integrity surely demands that all teams are treated equally and if Leeds had to play at neutral venues, and Fulham and Brentford didn’t, it would be hugely unfair.

It’s not the end of the story.

Fans could now dictate what happens and all eyes will be on Liverpool and Leeds fans now. Liverpool will probably get the chance to seal the title win first as they’re so far clear of Man City.

If they win the title and Liverpool fans swarm the stadium, it could see the situation change for Leeds.

Likewise, if Leeds fans head down to Elland Road for the massive clash against Fulham, it could also have a negative effect.

It’s imperative that Leeds get the chance to play at Elland Road. That should happen now – if the fans behave and stay away.
