MOT View: Leeds must set deadline over Adams move as talkSPORT journalist spins new narrative

Leeds United fans are currently hanging on any bit of information they can get about their number one transfer target, Che Adams.

Phil Hay is one of the must trusted sources of Leeds news and his last update was hopeful.

Hay added that Leeds had set a deadline for Adams and that they would move onto other targets if they weren’t successful.

However, there’s a contrasting narrative coming from talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, who reports on Southampton news for the radio station.

He tweeted a fairly combative message on Tuesday lunchtime that said, “Leeds can set all the deadlines they want but Southampton are not interested in giving them Che Adams. Am also reliably informed the player is happy at Southampton. Nothing to see here.”

Leeds fans piled on and even Phil Hay got involved in the discussion.

Crook went on to clarify that what he had said wasn’t meant as a slight on Hay who he called a “great operator”. He added that he was just reporting what his contacts were telling him.

And Crook is an established journalist, just like Hay, and he knows Southampton very well. He will have good contacts at the club.

What’s clear is that there are two contrasting narratives.

Both sides are agreed that Ralph Hasenhuttl wants the player to stay. But Hay was adamant in the thread that Adams is keen to join Leeds.

Hay is rarely wrong about stuff and he’s not a journalist who writes about conjecture.

That doesn’t mean that what he says is always what’s going to happen. Transfers are complicated and the story can change on a sixpence.

What this comes down to is whose contacts you trust and/or which side of the story you want to believe.

However, on top of that time is ticking.

The fact that Leeds are still persisting with Adams backs up Hay’s side of the story. If they’d been told a straight no they would have moved on with other targets.

However, there are obviously complications and Leeds can’t afford to hold on for too long.

Leeds must now set a strict and realistic deadline and then move onto alternative players if they can’t strike a deal.
