MOT View: Leeds leave some fans cold after official Tuesday post
Leeds United showed their solidarity with protests in the USA on Tuesday with a simple tweet using the hashtag #BlackoutTuesday.
It’s a small gesture but it helps keep the issue in the minds of people and it makes us proud to be a Leeds fan.
Or at least it would if there still wasn’t a cloud hanging over the club following the Kiko Casilla racism case.
Leeds supported Casilla throughout the process but, when he was found guilty, the club should have accepted that and at the least apologised to Jonathan Leko.
The official club tweet came after Leeds attacker Tyler Roberts and the LUFC Trust posted the same message.
We absolutely agree with the sentiment behind the tweet.
Some Leeds fans might ask why their club is getting involved with politics. Many fans think politics and sport should be kept apart.
But it doesn’t matter what your politics are, this is a matter that transcends left or right.
And Liverpool showed the way when their players took the knee in support of the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
The murder of George Floyd might have lit the fuse in America but this is an issue that reaches everywhere.
Ian Wright has been subjected to foul abuse on Twitter. Football players have abused by fans.
However, Casilla’s case was a high-profile one and we still don’t think it’s been adequately dealt with.
This shines another light on that and some fans were left cold by Tuesday’s tweet.
This fan was typical of a number of similar responses.
Racism exists everywhere and on issues like this it’s important to make a stand and, where possible, to show your solidarity with people who are suffering unimaginably and unfairly.
It’s also important to be seen to take action and not just make gestures.
