MOT View: Leeds 26y/o could have field day v Wigan as Latics defender reportedly nearing exit
Leeds United winger Helder Costa showed glimpses of the quality he can produce in the second-half against Millwall on Tuesday.
The Portuguese international has been way too inconsistent since arriving in the summer, and now has competition in the shape of Ian Poveda at Elland Road.
Costa was much better in the 3-2 victory against the Lions, constantly causing the physical backline of Millwall problems – he would have scored if it wasn’t for a superb save from Bartosz Bialkowski.
Only Jack Harrison has completed more dribbles per game than the 26-year-old, but he must find more consistency in his game in West Yorkshire [WhoScored]. His four-goal involvements aren’t good enough, with his fellow winger having been involved on seven more occasions.
That second half against Millwall could offer Costa a chance to kickstart a good run of form, with the perfect opportunity coming up against Wigan.
BBC Sport have reported that Latics left-back Antonee Robinson is set to join Italian giants AC Milan before Friday’s deadline – a move that will leave Paul Cook’s side weak in defence.
Robinson has been Wigan’s standout performer according to WhoScored. The American has been phenomenal in all defensive aspects – averaging 2.3 tackles, two interceptions, and 2.8 clearances in every game.
The 22-year-old has been solid, and he could have given Costa a real tough test. But, if Wigan struggle to find a suitable replacement, he could have a field day at Elland Road on Saturday.
Their next recognised left-back would be Kal Naismith, but he has been moved into the heart of defence in recent weeks and another transition could see him struggle against the table-toppers.
Costa is showing glimpses, and him finding the form that he had at Wolves in their promotion year could be the difference between Championship or Premier League football next season.
