MOT View: Leeds set for crucial update on Weds evening after contact training at Thorp Arch
The next round of Coronavirus test results will be announced by the EFL later on Wednesday and they’re absolutely crucial for Leeds United and the Championship restart date of June 20.
Leeds have been clear in all rounds of testing so far but these latest test results are going to be the most significant yet.
That’s because clubs like Leeds started full contact training this week.
Leeds moved back to contact training on Monday and were one of the first clubs to do so.
Some clubs started later but the majority should have been in contact training before the latest tests were conducted.
The test results started off positively for the Championship with just two positives from one club (Hull) in round one.
However, since then, they’ve started rising with three positives from two clubs in round two (Fulham and Blackburn).
Round three saw ten positives from eight clubs, including Leeds’ promotion rivals Fulham.
It’s great news that Leeds players are clear but this is the round that could give the clearest indication yet as to whether the Championship will suffer any major threat to the restart.
If test results spike up again then a large number of players could be forced to self-isolate with only three days of training left after they return.
We need Leeds to stay clear, obviously, or the affected players might not be able to start in the opening game. But we also need other clubs to record zero positives too.
A rise into the 20s and 30s could form the first sign of a significant issue ahead of the Championship restarting.
