MOT View: Leeds may as well wave goodbye to £20k-a-wk player if one PL club comes calling

Most Leeds United fans are resigned to the fact that if the club does not win promotion this season then Kalvin Phillips is likely to move on and join a club in the Premier League.

It is not because the 24-year-old wants to leave or anything like that, it’s simply because he has outgrown the Championship now and deserves to be playing in the top-flight and for England.

Phil Hay put it best recently by claiming that the “Championship is becoming easy” for the midfielder, who is valued at over £20million by Leeds.

One Premier League team that is hot on the heels of Phillips is Liverpool, according to Bleacher Report journalist Dean Jones.

Writing on the Bleacher Report website, Jones said: “Outside of [Timo] Werner, they want a midfielder, but it would be more of a squad player like [Todd] Cantwell from Norwich or Kalvin Phillips of Leeds. I think that gives you an idea of how Liverpool wants to strengthen and add depth rather than another elite signing.”

Even if Liverpool want Phillips to add some strength in depth to their midfield options, Leeds might as well wave goodbye to the midfielder if the reigning European champions come calling.

Phillips has flourished under Marcelo Bielsa and the £20,000-a-week [Mail] ace is bound to do the same in a team managed by Jurgen Klopp and captained by Jordan Henderson.

Although he’d be competing with Henderson for a spot in the Liverpool side, there are few better players to take Phillips under their wing than the Reds captain.

Phillips is undeniably the most talented midfielder in the Championship and even though he is a Leeds lad who supports the club he plays for, turning down a move to Liverpool would be unimaginable.

In other Leeds United news, this Whites star has come a long way since he snubbed Andrea Radrizzani back in 2017.
