MOT View: Leeds could be handed big advantage in 20/21 Premier League season
As Leeds United fans we’re desperate for the Championship to finish on the pitch.
We want Leeds to finish what they started and we don’t want any question marks over the achievement.
However, not playing could give Leeds a sizeable advantage when they head into the top flight – as is looking almost certain now whether the season is finished or not.
The 19/20 Premier League season is set to be played through June until the end of July. The Champions League and Europa League will then be concluded in August.
The 20/21 season will probably start without much of a break in September.
That means Premier League sides aren’t going to get much of a pre-season.
Leeds, on the other hand, could see themselves getting a long break before heading back to Thorp Arch at the end of June, with over two months to prepare for the new season.
It means Bielsa can work on getting the most out of his players, with friendlies behind closed doors being used to get players back to match fitness.
The flipside – if the Championship does re-start – could mean a really small window to prepare for the Premier League.
However, there would be a downside too. It would mean that Leeds and Jean-Kevin Augustin have to come to a decision on his permanent transfer without the striker having made a start for his new club.
Leeds have an obligation to buy him but Augustin would have to be happy with the move and he would surely want reassuring over game time.
That could be tricky from what we’ve seen of him at the moment.
