MOT View: Leaked PFA document suggests Leeds may pocket unexpected PL cash boost

Leeds United could be set to receive an unexpected cash boost from the EFL if the Premier League is able to resume, according to a leaked document.

As seen on The Sun website, the PFA have written to players saying that the Premier League are aware that there is a major financial impact on some EFL clubs amid the current coronavirus crisis.

If matches are played behind closed doors, a good number of clubs will miss out on crucial matchday revenue that usually keeps them afloat.

While Leeds are not a club that solely relies on matchday income, there is no doubt that playing the club’s remaining nine matches with no fans will have a big impact.

It wouldn’t be the end of the world like it would for some clubs in League One and League Two but still, the Whites will miss out on a good amount of cash that could be crucial for them to build a team for the Premier League, assuming they go up.

And the Premier League are aware of this, as seen in a leaked document.

It says: “The Premier League are conscious that behind-closed-doors football is costly for the EFL and have obligations to support the lower leagues.

“However Rick Parry, the EFL chairman, has not heard anything concrete from the Premier League. No figure has been discussed.

“The focus of the Premier League right now is returning to play.

“It may be that once they get back playing they will know the financial damage they face and then look to help the EFL.”

It would be good of the Premier League to do this because, at the moment, it seems that England’s top-flight is a lot more likely to restart than the EFL.

As mentioned, Leeds should be fine if the Championship season does resume with no fans in attendance but it will still hit them in the pocket a lot harder than it would for Premier League clubs due to the astronomical gap broadcast deals.

But still, it would be a good thing to happen for the Whites and all over clubs outside of the top-flight to receive this unexpected cash boost.
