MOT View: Fans must accept Kinnear comment reveals best hope of promotion for Leeds
Leeds United chief Angus Kinnear has said if it was a straight choice between playing behind closed doors or not finishing the season, he would take the former.
In an interview with Sky Sports he said it was “vital” that the remaining fixtures are completed.
We know that’s not what some fans want to hear but promotion for Leeds is the only thing that matters at the moment.
All football has been suspended in the UK until April 30 and only the most optimistic would say it’s likely that games started again then.
If they did, there must be zero chance of that happening with fans in place.
More likely, the 19/20 season will finish late with fixtures most likely to be played in the summer months at the earliest after the Euro 2020 finals were postponed.
Even then it seems unthinkable that tens of thousands of fans would be able to congregate in a stadium.
We’d love to poll fans and find out the exact split of views but we’ve seen more than one fan on Twitter say they’d rather void the season then miss out on seeing the club get promoted.
Some feelings are obviously running high but fans will be able to see every Leeds game on TV if they’re played behind closed doors.
These are remarkable circumstances and – forgive us for saying this – fans’ feelings have to be put second behind the future of the club.
We don’t need to tell fans how much is at stake for Leeds this season – Andrea Radrizzani, Marcelo Bielsa, Kalvin Phillips… We could potentially lose all three if Leeds don’t get promoted.
That’s without going into the financials, with Leeds already being reported as one of the most vulnerable clubs in the Championship.
We’ve said this before but we’ll say it again – the most important thing is the public’s health. The most important thing in the football world is for Leeds to get promoted.
Fans must get behind the idea that Sky Sports – oft seen as the enemy – could provide the only means for everyone to get as close to the last nine fixtures as possible.
