MOT View: Leeds struggles could see Bielsa unleash secret weapon not seen since 2018 v Blackburn

Leeds United have had their struggles with strikers this season.

Eddie Nketiah was recalled by Arsenal from a season-long loan after not playing enough.

His replacement, Jean-Kevin Augustin, has been sent back to RB Leipzig after playing even less.

It means that Patrick Bamford is the only recognised senior striker in the squad. Tyler Roberts is an option but is currently playing in the number 10 role, with Pablo Hernandez not 100% fit.

It’s a big problem. Bamford isn’t the most prolific striker and Leeds desperately need an option off the bench.

That sets the stage for a recall for Ryan Edmondson.

Edmondson has been banging the goals in for the Under-23s both this season (eight) and last (20), and has made one appearance for Bielsa, back in September 2018.

However, he hasn’t been seen since and that’s odd given Leeds’ problems in front of goal.

There is one issue. Edmondson had an operation just before lockdown and although he’s fit again now, this could be an issue.

With no Under-23 games since the season was suspended, Edmondson hasn’t been able to get any minutes under his belt, but how fit does he need to be to sit on the bench and possibly come on for the last 10 minutes if needed?

He’s a big, physical striker and can mix it with the most towering centre-backs. With Bielsa able to name nine substitutes on the bench it surely makes sense to have an option there and it might put that little bit of pressure on Bamford that he needs to start firing again.

It would be out of character for Bielsa but these are strange times and we think it makes absolute sense to give Edmondson a chance.
