MOT View: Bad news for Leeds as PFA boss’ comments on Coronavirus could put end to PL suggestion
PFA boss Gordon Taylor has called for the European Championship to be cancelled in order for the English leagues to be concluded this year.
There have been suggestions that if the season is cancelled, there will be a 22-team Premier League next season including Leeds United and West Brom.
That would be great for the Whites, but Taylor has claimed that he would want the season to be concluded properly to give teams at the bottom of the top-flight the best chance to survive.
Taylor claimed that the EURO’s will not take place until next year, giving the summer for leagues such as the Championship time to be completed.
“I would expect the EURO’s to be put back probably for, have to be a year probably,” he told Sky Sports News.
“I would hope the season could be extended and we’re flexible enough to deal with that. I think it would be unfair, not least on Liverpool, but all clubs who are doing well.
“Those clubs who have done well, and are at the top deserve to be there. I think it would seem really weird if we started a new season.”
That is bad news for Leeds, but it isn’t the end of the world. Angus Kinnear has come out and admitted on Monday that the Whites’ preference would be too complete the season for the fans.
With nine games to go, Leeds remain on top of the table with a seven-point to Fulham. With some favourable fixtures to come as well, Marcelo Bielsa’s men are already way on their to promotion.
The 22-team Premier League would instantly give Leeds promotion, but either way, we remain confident that we will be back in the top-flight next season – whenever that is.
