MOT View: Average league position of remaining opponents could give Leeds boost over WBA
The Mirror have released a report sharing that Leeds United could potentially have the easiest run-in with nine games to go in the Championship.
The average position of the Whites’ remaining opponents is 14.6, better than the rest of the chasing pack in the second-tier with Premier League promotion on the line.
It has been confirmed by the EFL that it should return on the 20th of June, with Leeds’ first-two games potentially their hardest – Cardiff away followed by Fulham at home.
Compare that to the Whites’ nearest rivals, the average position of West Brom’s is 12.4. So, the top-two both would class their remaining fixtures as not the hardest, although they still need to go out and do the business on the pitch.
That is the top-two spots shared, what about Fulham in third? The Cottagers currently sit in-behind and have been hit hard by the Coronavirus pandemic – three of their players testing positive.
Things don’t get much easier on the pitch either. Scott Parker’s men still have Brentford, Leeds and West Brom to play and would realistically need wins from those games to break into the top two.
Fulham were in average form compared to Leeds before the break, winning two of their last five games, but only losing once.
The Cottagers only stand a 28% chance of promotion according to prediction expert Nate Silver, with their nearest rivals Brentford standing a better chance of going up [FiveThirtyEight].
Leeds, on the other hand, have a 98% chance of going up, and you have to believe that their recent form along with their remaining fixtures is why.
