MOT View: Augustin might look the part now but has it all to prove at Leeds after Phil Hay claim
Jean-Kevin Augustin was lovingly christened Big Kev by the Leeds United fans when he arrived on loan in January.
Unfortunately, when they get their first glimpse of him on the pitch, the nickname seemed all too prescient.
Augustin looked heavy and quickly succumbed to a hamstring injury under the notoriously tough Bielsa regime.
The new Leeds striker is determined if nothing else and Leeds posted a video a couple of weeks ago that showed a dramatic transformation.
Augustin was obviously putting himself through his paces in a bid to get himself fit for the remainder of the season and fans were loving it.
However, Augustin has got a lot to prove if his stay at Leeds is going to be a triumphant one.
Athletic journalist Phil Hay confirmed that his current wages at RB Leipzig are around the €93k-a-week mark.
That’s more than double the biggest earners at Leeds at the moment, thought to be Patrick Bamford and Kiko Casilla.
There’s no suggestion that Leeds are paying Augustin’s wages in full at the moment but if he signs for Leeds at the end of the season we can’t see him wanting to take a big drop.
If he wants a near six-figure-a-week salary then he’s going to have to prove that he’s as talented as his early promise predicted.
Leeds can’t afford to get a deal like this wrong and will be hoping to get a much closer look at Augustin before the 19/20 season ends.
